Something different…..poetry by John O’Donohue

Every day in my email inbox I get a poem and lovely image from Panhala, a Yahoo Group, which is run by Joe Riley. I first came across this service (and I use the word “service” deliberately as Mr Riley runs a true service to the community with his lovely posts) when I lived in the UK in 2003.  I have followed these posts regularly ever since as they really light my life. Panhala had a break over Christmas and to get various problems with the internet service sorted out. This is the first post and I thought I’d share it because John O’Donohue is one of my favourite poets and because the theme is gently encouraging and uplifting.

For a New Beginning

In out-of-the-way places of the heart,
Where your thoughts never think to wander,
This beginning has been quietly forming,
Waiting until you were ready to emerge.

For a long time it has watched your desire,
Feeling the emptiness growing inside you,
Noticing how you willed yourself on,
Still unable to leave what you had outgrown.

It watched you play with the seduction of safety
And the gray promises that sameness whispered,
Heard the waves of turmoil rise and relent,
Wondered would you always live like this.

Then the delight, when your courage kindled,
And out you stepped onto new ground,
Your eyes young again with energy and dream,
A path of plenitude opening before you.

Though your destination is not yet clear
You can trust the promise of this opening;
Unfurl yourself into the grace of beginning
That is at one with your life’s desire.

Awaken your spirit to adventure;
Hold nothing back, learn to find ease in risk;
Soon you will be home in a new rhythm,
For your soul senses the world that awaits you.

  1. I, too, am very delighted to be receiving my daily dose of beauty, peace, and thoughtfulness from Mr. Riley. He mentioned that he was trying to restore the archives, but I still don’t find them when I search. I’m longing to find the poem The True Love–can’t recall the author’s name or even an exact line or two to aid in an internet search. I sent a reply to today’s posting, asking him where the archives are located now.

    Your blog is terrific! I could spend all day looking around here!

    • Thanks, Martha, I have been following Panhala since 2003, amazingly long time, but I do so love reading Joe Riley’s posts every day. A true labour of love which I think has brought beauty into so many lives.

  2. I would love to have the opportunity to personally thank Joe Riley for all the incredible morning inspiration since 2006. The poems and images are so extraordinary, especially in a world where so much is only provided to stimulate some form of marketing. As was said earlier, this is selfless service and the feeling from that intention feeds the heart and soul, which are in grave danger of being starved out of this man-referenced world.

    • I do so agree with you. I came across Joe Riley’s posts when I lived in the UK in 2002-4 and I feel blessed to have received these lovely pieces of poetry every day since. He really is a gift of love to those of us lucky enough to come across his posts.
